North West Mining and Geological Exploration Bureau for Non-ferrous Metals was established in 1957, previously, it was affiliated to Ministry of Metallurgical Industry, having undertaken the non ferrous mineral resources exploration in five provinces in northwest. In the beginning of 1970s, it was under the administration of Shaanxi Province, by the end of 1970s, it was back to the Ministry of Metallurgical Industry again. In 1982, it was affiliated to China National Non-Ferrous Metals Industry Corp. after localization in 2000, it was again affiliated to Shaanxi Non-ferrous Metal Holding Group in Shaanxi Province.
The Bureau has 5 comprehensive geological exploration departments, together with 11 professional geological exploration organizations such as Institute of Geological Exploration, and Geologic Research Academy, Physical & Chemical Exploration General Team, Hydrogeological Engineering General Team, Research Institute of Geological Machinery, Institute of Surveying & Mapping. The Bureau has 1233 technical personnel in a variety of academic disciplines and the primary technical personnel of the Bureau are concentrated in Institute of Geological Exploration, Physical & Chemical Exploration Center, Remote Sensing Center, Analysis and Testing Center, having 17 national class A qualification certificates, 15 class B qualification certificates, 16 class C qualification certificates in terms of geological exploration. In terms of exploration engineering, the Bureau holds 7 class A qualification certificates in drilling, geotechnical engineering exploration and geotechnical engineering construction, the main business scope contains regional geological survey, mineral geologic investigation, geophysical prospecting, geochemical exploration, remote-sensing geologic surveying, hydrogeological investigation, engineering geologic investigation, environmental geologic investigation, geological exploration engineering and petroleum drilling engineering etc.
Since its establishment, North West Mining and Geological Exploration Bureau for Non-ferrous Metals has made resplendent achievements in terms of metal mineral exploration and great contribution to Northwest especially the economic development in Shaanxi Province. It has proven more than ?30 mineral species and evaluated & explored more than 120 large, medium and small sized mineral deposits within the boundaries of Shaanxi Province in China, it has submitted more than 1000 geologic reports, 600 million tons of ferrous metal reserves, more than 20 million tons of ferrous metal reserves, nearly 3000 tons of precious metal, more than 7 million tons of metallurgical auxiliary material and chemical raw material, which has established the 5 major metal mineral resources bases in Shaanxi Province, namely Mianxian County, Lueyang County, Ningqiang County; Fengxian County, Taibai County; Zhashui County, Shanyang County; Zhenan County, Xunyang County;and Xiao Qinling Mountain.More than 80% of the resources submitted by North West Mining and Geological
Exploration Bureau for Non-ferrous Metals have been developed and utilized. Therefore, a great number of mining enterprises have been established such as the Lueyang Iron and Steel Works, Hanjiang Iron and Steel Works, Jianchaling Gold Mine and Qiantongshan Lead-zinc Mine, Sifang Gold Mine, Shaanxi Silver Mine.
 In recent years, North West Mining and Geological Exploration Bureau for Non-ferrous Metals has actively responded to the government?ˉs call, and formulated the development strategy of ?°based on Shaanxi Province, whole country and world oriented?±, it has conducted geotechnical exchange and prospecting cooperation with world famous mining companies and organizations such as Japan Metal Mining Group, Sino Mining International Limited in Australia, Placer Dome in Canada, KOTRA in Korea, Geological Survey of Finland, Teck Cominco, and it has undertaken the geologic prospecting projects in Guinea, Mongolia, Argentina, Indonesia, Zimbabwe, its prospecting range contains more than 20 countries in Asia, Africa, America and established a mining company through joint investment by the Bureau and a Canadian joint venture so as to explore and develop the mineral resources in North American Region.
Through 50 years of development, North West Mining and Geological Exploration Bureau for Non-ferrous Metals has already developed into an comprehensive geological exploration organization having complete academic disciplines and geological prospecting team with rich experience, advanced prospecting instrument and equipment and technical method, mature geologic prospecting theory, multi-level, multi-function, omnibearing comprehensive geologic investigation and resource development system and integrating geologic investigation and mining development, engineering construction and diversification (real estate and other) harmonious development.
